Most planes end up where they are expected to land. Concrete. Airstrip lighting. Thrust reversing. Taxiing to the gate. Forgotten by the time you collect your luggage.

This video is about the flights that were out of runway, out of engines, or out of options — and still managed to set an airliner down. But not on a prepared runway. On rivers, corn fields, levees, race tracks, lagoons, and open ocean. US Airways Flight 1549 – “Miracle on the Hudson” (2009)
Dual bird strike after takeoff from New York. Both engines gone and 155 lives depending on whether the Hudson River can become a runway.

Air Canada Flight 143 – “The Gimli Glider” (1983)
A wide body over Canada quietly runs out of fuel after a metric conversion error and glides toward an old air force base that is now a drag strip and family picnic ground.

Scandinavian Airlines Flight 751 – “Miracle at Gottröra” (1991)
Invisible ice, two failed engines and an MD-81 that breaks into three pieces in a snowy field, with everyone on board alive.

Ural Airlines Flight 178 – “Miracle in the Cornfield” (2019)
A bird strike after takeoff from Moscow and an Airbus A321 that ends up belly-landing in a cornfield with all 233 people surviving.

TACA Flight 110 – Grass on the Levee (1988)
A Boeing 737 loses both engines in a thunderstorm near New Orleans and glides to a stop on a narrow grass levee beside a canal.

Southern Airways Flight 242 – Highway into the Storm (1977)
A DC-9 flies into the core of a supercell, loses both engines and aims for a two-lane highway in rural Georgia.

Garuda Indonesia Flight 421 – The River That Became a Runway (2002)
Dual flameout in a storm over Java and a Seven Thirty Seven wedged between the banks of the Bengawan Solo River and more.
