On December 28th, 2022, Some local foamers and I ventured out south of the city to watch some trains!


After not going out filming for a couple weeks, I finally made it trackside. After going west to Rosser and HALL ROAD, we went south along CP's La Riviere sub. The line ran from winnipeg to morris and south to rosenfeld where it'd head west through morden, winkler and la riviere where itd become the napinka sub and meet the estevan sub going into saskatchewan. the track technically goes straight south at rosenfeld as the gretna sub (now spur) to altona and head through gretna into north dakota. the line was abandonded to the border around 1996. the la riviere west of winkler is owned by the boundary trails rwy and was also abandoned past manitou in 2008.

CP GP20c ECO's 2325 and 2290 lead a southbound 'altona turn' past us as we chased it from the outskirts of winnipeg to the former manitoba pool grain elevator in domain. we saw it in la salle and paced it just south of the small town.

We then heard that CN 533 was heading north towards the city, so we headed straight east of domain to ste. agathe, mb on the CN Letellier sub.

532/533 is CN's daily local freight running from Grand Forks, ND, (as a BNSF train) to the Emerson border, and north to WPG as a CN train. recently the power has been a 50/50 split between BNSF and CN locomotives, although sometimes it's 100 percent CN or 100 percent BNSF power, with the occasional SF warbonnet or BN cascade green engine. this train had two SD75i's, CN 5786 and BNSF 289, a former SF warbonnet unit with BNSF lettering. We were running out of time to film so we shot it quickly at Ste. Agathe and again near Howden, MB. There was a hill near the tracks, a really tall hill, so i decided to climb it and see what kind of shot i would get from up there. it was pretty nice! anways we watched the train go by as it headed through st. norbert and into the city.
