François Jacques Auguste Rebattu (April 3, 1874 Berlin - Oct. 24, 1938 Amsterdam) was a German/Duitch composer who was active as a musician (cornet) salon orchestra conductor, composer and arranger of Dutch light music. He lived for a short while in Rotterdam and Paris but was mainly active in Amsterdam.

I thought it a good idea to show first the score and then a repeat with images of the Amsterdam Rebattu was familiar with.. The salon music fits it very well.

There is little known of the life of Frans Rebattu He is mentioned in some newspaper clippings and seemed to have been active on Dutch Radio; especially the AVRO and KRO. Chant du soir was performed (date unknown) between 12PM and 2PM at "Middagmuziek" by the AVRO Quartet. It is easy to imagine this music having been played at the famous Café Américain at the Leidseplein in Amsterdam 1930's.

Frans Rebattu was a very good piston player, working for many years in "Flora" in Amsterdam. He was a very good musician, although his compositions do not mean much. "Zaanlandsche Molen" is one of his best works and deserves an occasional hearing. The mill vibration can be heard in the drum, the double bass plays "the cow" as does the trombone, and in this way more sounds of nature are imitated. We do not know where Frans Rebattu is currently working. His brother Theodoor is a horn player of the Concergebouw Orchestra.

Not much is known about composer François Rebattu. He was born in Berlin in 1874 and died in Amsterdam in 1938. He is the composer of a number of works in the collection of Muziekschatten.
From this it can be concluded that his music belongs to the genre of salon music. He must have traveled around widely as a musician and - witness his membership of the Société des Compositeurs de Paris - lived in France for some time. He seems to have written salon music for the ambience of Cafe Americain.

The Chant du soir is undated and was probably composed in the 1920s or 1930s.
The atmospheric work has the special feature that it can be expanded at will with a Glockenspiel. And with those bell sounds you automatically imagine yourself on a Christmas Eve in Café Americain.
