Satellite broadband is emerging as a critical enabler of inclusive digital access—especially in regions where deploying fibre and mobile infrastructure is difficult or uneconomical. India is now moving closer to large-scale adoption of satellite internet connectivity, with regulatory progress supporting the next phase of commercial operations.

In June 2025, the Government of India granted Starlink a GMPCS license, marking a key step toward offering satellite broadband services in the country. Starlink’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite architecture enables broadband delivery directly to user terminals, without dependence on terrestrial towers, cables, or fixed network infrastructure—making it particularly relevant for underserved and remote geographies.

India’s role in this transition is strengthened by its established space ecosystem. ISRO’s proven launch capabilities (PSLV, GSLV, LVM3) and operational communication satellite capacity support broader momentum in satellite-based connectivity. As regulatory frameworks mature and infrastructure scales, satellite broadband has the potential to expand digital access across education, healthcare, agriculture, and MSME growth—moving connectivity beyond “pockets of availability” toward wider national coverage.
