In process of researching and writing a biography of Dr. Alvenia Fulton (1893-1999), Historian Frederick Douglass Opie found this rare recording of one of her many television appearances. Beginning in the late 1950s, her Fultonia’s Health Food and Fasting Center, was a local hub for health foods and natural remedies, always buzzing with customers. And while Chicagoans frequented the store for freshly prepared meals and alternative medicine, notable figures from all over the country—politicians, musicians, activists, actors, and athletes alike—came to the shop to hear her sagely wisdom. A world-renowned nutritionist and naturopath, Fulton was humble in appearance and demeanor. Customers and celebrities aimed to gain the lean frame and clear, supple skin that Fulton obtained through her wholefood plant-based lifestyle. And while she gave individualized care to every person who walked through her doors, her impact was broad enough to help initiate the health and wellness movement that proliferates our world today.
