#CA79 #Kawai #Digital

Hello, and thanks for joining us at the Merriam Pianos YouTube channel for another piano video. Today, we’ll be doing a much requested review of the new Kawai CA79 home digital piano.

The CA79 is a relatively new addition to the market, as an upgraded version of the highly regarded CA78. This is a high end instrument for serious players.

If this is the first time to the Merriam Pianos channel, please subscribe, we’d really appreciate the support.

Piano Sound:

There’s actually two sound engines inside the CA79, including the SK-EX Rendering engine, also found in the Novus 10, Novus 5 and CA99. This engine is a modeled sound engine built around an 88 note sample of the Shigeru Kawai EX concert grand, and it boasts unlimited polyphony. Beyond this engine, we have Kawai’s Harmonic Imaging XL sound engine, with 256 note polyphony.

The CA79 and CA99 will inevitably be often compared, and despite the exact same sound engines, they actually differ quite a bit musically. The CA79 took a little bit of tweaking in the Virtual Technician mode to optimize in my opinion, whereas the CA99 played excellent right out of the box. Just a little bit of feedback to consider if you’re comparing these two instruments. Once I’d tweaked some of the settings, the CA79 sounds absolutely excellent.

In terms of the speakers, the CA79 has 6 speakers in total, including 2 woofers, 2 mids and 2 tweeters across the top. There’s 100 total watts of speaker, so ample power to fill a decently sized space without having to connect to external speakers.

In addition to the piano patches, there are a ton of other sounds on-board. Navigating them is super cool with the cutting edge touch screen interface - definitely one of the top interfacing currently available in a digital piano. There’s a wide variety of electric piano sounds, strings, organs and various other sounds. The quality of the patches across the board is very high, in fact, I couldn’t find a single one I felt was poorly executed.

One last thing about the sound; since the CA79 has full Bluetooth Audio, you can essentially use it like a stereo by streaming music from a phone or iPad right through the speakers. This makes playing along with tracks super easy as well.

Piano Action:

The CA79 uses Kawai’s brand new Grand Feel III action, which is an upgrade over the Grand Feel II found in the previous generation CA78. The Grand Feel III features a new way of connecting the end of the keystick to the capstan, which is going to translate to greater durability and longevity of the action. This was a smart decision by Kawai considering just how popular the CA series pianos have been in various institutional settings. The action also features a triple sensor, escapement, and a subtle not noticeable texture on the keys, much like the Grand Feel II had as well.

The thing I love about this action, and about Kawai’s wooden actions in general, is just how robustly built they are. The keystick is exactly the same as the ones they use in their upright pianos, as are the front pins, felt pads and balance rails. These little things go a long way in making the playing experience that much more authentic. Overall, this is arguably, the top piano action curren in its class.

Features:

The touchscreen is worth highlighting here again; it looks great and is a big improvement over the previous generation’s touchscreen in terms of easy of use and responsiveness. There’s of course a built in rhythm that also features a variety of rhythms.

Also worth mentioning again is the Virtual Technician feature, which allows the user control over a ton of variables with regards to the sound, such as the touch curve and damper resonance.

There’s a built in recorder which is handy, and allows for saving and on-board storage. Another cool feature is the hours and hours of preloaded classical music, as well as a variety of lesson books.

Conclusions:

Kawai’s really done a great job here. This is an instrument that will satisfy pianists of all levels, including professionals who need a great digital piano. Get yourself out to a showroom near you to try one!
