I've had several people come to me lately and say "My coronary calcium is (blank), but my cholesterol values are good. I'm okay, right?"

No, absolutely not. The coronary calcium score is a measure of the disease, atherosclerosis. Cholesterol values are nothing more than crude, indirect measures of risk and they are quite poor at doing so. A coronary calcium is a vastly superior measure to track and to work to stop its progression or reduce it.

The tragedy of cholesterol, besides draining people's money for a useless collection of cholesterol-reducing drugs, is that it takes everyone's attention away from the REAL causes of heart disease.
