This episode will be the first of 3 covering the IMBA epic Ape Canyon to Plains of Abraham ride. The ride clocks in at 20.4 miles and about 3700 feet of climbing total.

This is in the Gifford Pinchot National forest and goes through the Mt St Helens Volcanic monument.

This video will cover the ascent of Ape Canyon trail and Loowit #216 up to the Plains of Abraham. Video 2 will cover the Plains of Abraham and video 3 will cover the descent of Ape Canyon trail.

If you do this ride let me suggest you take a day off work and do it on a weekday. THere will be a ton of hikers on the weekend and it’s always easier biking with fewer hikers on the trail. This is heavily trafficked due to the epic views.

Also let me suggest you plan on spending some time on this ride. Sure you could crank out the 20 miles and have fun but you are doing yourself a dis service if you approach this ride in that way. THis is the type of ride where you go slow, take pictures and enjoy the scenery. Bring yourself lunch and snack and soak in this ride. This is the reason people come to the PNW. You experience old growth forest, truly unique geology that makes it seem like you are biking on the moon and unique plant life.

So many stories have been told and TV specials have been made about this area and the historic eruption. NAt Geo could come out here and create a cinematic overture to this place. You get to ride your bike through the remnants of those epic stories and witness the recovery. You should count yourself lucky during every pedal stroke of this ride.
