Penasquitos Canyon is a large Canyon preserve and Recreational park situated about 30 minutes North of the city of San Diego in the Mira Mesa area of northern San Diego. It boasts over 4,000 acres with hiking/biking trails running along the canyon floor and up the sides of the Canyon walls. Today, we're checking out the canyon floor and some of the side hill trails. Overall the valley floor is mostly wide flat gravel trails, all the best trails are up the side of the canyon, such as "side hill", "Big Waimea", "The sh!ts" and others.

I ended up in San Diego for business in the winter of 2018 so I thought I'd bring my bike and try to sample some local terrain while I was down there. I chose to ride Black Mountain and Peñasquitos canyon as they were closest by but there are a number of other very good places to ride in the area, such as the famous Ted Williams trails, mission trails and Pine valley (further inland).

The terrain in coastal San Diego is really rough and rocky, lot's of sharp rock and baby heads with hard packed gravely, single track down lower in the meadows and fields. It's amazing terrain for MTB but make sure you have a good bike with plenty of spare tires and patches.

There is definitely some good mountain biking to be had in Pen Canyon/Delmare preserve but you need to know where to look. It's worth noting, the trails that run along the bottom of the canyon are wide, easy and boring. But they still make for a nice ride if that's what you aim to do.
