Q.1. Why do we need to separate different components of a mixture? Give two examples.

Ans: We need to separate different components of a mix ture, because –

(i) We need to separate harmful or non-useful substances that may be mixed with a useful substance. For example, we separate stones. from rice to remove harmful components and tea leaves from tea to remove non-useful component.

(ii) We need to use the components separately. For example, we separate butter from milk by churning milk to use both the components separately.


Q.2. What is winnowing? Where is it used?

Ans: Winnowing is a process used to separate heavier and lighter components of a mixture by wind or by blowing air. Winnowing is used by farmers to separate lighter husk particles from heavier seeds of grain.


Q.3. How will you separate husk or dirt particles from a given sample of pulses before cooking?

Ans: By the method of handpicking.

Q.4. What is sieving? Where is it ased?

Ans: Sieving is a method in which finer particles of a mix- sure are allowed to pass through the holes of a sieve while the larger impurities remain on the sieve. Sieving is used at homes to separate impurities from flour, in a flour mill to separate impurities from wheat before grinding and at construction sites to separate pebbles and stones from sand.

Q.5. How will you separate sand and water from their mixture?

Ans: By the methods of sedimentation and decantation.

Q.6. Is it possible to separate sugar mixed with wheat flour? If yes, how will you do it?

Ans: Yes, I will do it by the method of sieving. In this method I will pour the mixture on a sieve having fine holes to allow the flour to pass through them. The larger particles of sugar will remain on the sieve.

Q.7. How would you obtain [clear water from sample of muddy water?

Ans: I will obtain clear water from a sample of muddy water by the process of filtration. I will use a piece of cloth and a filters paper as filters in this process.

(a) The method of separating seeds of paddy from its stalk is called ________.

Ans: Threshing.

(b) When milk, cooled after boiling, is poured onto a piece of cloth, the cream (malai) is left behind on it. This process of separating cream from milk is an example of ________.

(e) Salt is obtained from seawater by the process of ________.

Ans: Evaporation.


(d) Impurities settled at the bottom when muddy water was kept overnight in a bucket. The clear water was then poured off from the top. The process of separation used in this example is called ________.

Ans: sedimentation and decantation.

(a) A mixture of milk and water can be separated by filtration.

Ans: False.

(b) A mixture of powdered salt and sugar can be separated by the process of winnowing.

Ans: False.

Q.10. Lemonade is prepared by mixing lemon juice and sugar in water. you wish to add ice to cool it. Should you add ice to the lemonade before or after dissolving sugar? In which case would it be possible to dissolve more sugar?

Ans: We should add ice after dissolving sugar. In this case it would be possible to dissolve more sugar. Because if we add ice before dissolving sugar, then the lemonade will become cooler and later lesser amount of sugar will be dissolved.
