The 3-4-2-1 is a slight variation on the 3-4-3 who’s origin can be traced back to Vittorio Pozzo in Italy in the 1930’s and Herbert Chapman in England, but it wasn’t until Johan Cruyffs total football that the formation started to gain some serious attention. In recent years, the 3-4-2-1 has been the choice for many successful teams, including Thomas Tuchel’s Champions league winning Chelsea side, Lucien Favre’s Borussia Dortmund in 2018 or Antonio Conte’s Inter interchanging this lineup with the 3-5-2 during their serie a winning season.
