The perinatal time is full of uncertainty at all stages and there are so many mental health challenges that can occur before, during, and after being pregnant and parenting. So often one's voice and choice can be stripped away in the pregnancy and birthing process resulting in a deep sense of disempowerment. For all people, especially survivors of child sexual abuse and sexual violence as adults, it is pivotal that no matter what occurs in the process, their voice and choice is in the room. Advanced Directives make clear your healthcare choices and trusted people to make decisions on your behalf and yet there hasn't been one specific to the needs of pregnant and birthing people until now. Sonja shares her work collaboratively creating a Reproductive Psychiatric Advanced Directive.

BIO
Sonja Castañeda- Cudney is a mixed-methodology policy researcher and scholar at USC Sol Price School of Public Policy who studies reproductive health, mental health, perinatal mental health, and health equity/access to care. In collaboration with a team of scholars including Elyn Saks, psychoanalyst and author of The Center Cannot Hold, Sonja helped to craft a Reproductive Psychiatric Advanced Directive. Here we learn about the journey that led Sonja to her work to fight for reproductive justice through public policy and research as well as how to use the ReproPAD as both a care provider and a patient.
