Welcome to Poetry Changes Lives, my daily reading of poetry, history, and a thought for the day.

Today we remember the birth of John Milton (1608), one of England’s greatest poets, born just 16 years before the death of Shakespeare. A scholar of many languages and a committed Republican, Milton served under Cromwell as Secretary for Foreign Tongues. After the monarchy returned, he fell from favour and died in relative poverty.

By 1654 Milton was completely blind, yet some of his greatest work was created through dictation. His powerful and moving sonnet “On His Blindness” reflects on loss, patience, faith, and the quiet dignity of service.

“They also serve who only stand and wait.”
