We met with some people of Ukrainian descent who find themselves living in Israel and Palestine.

"There is a lot of fear among people and many people, including my family, have fled to the countryside. Unfortunately, 30 years after independence, I want to say that this really hurts the heart."

Dima was born in Kiev. He is 26 years old and has lived in Jerusalem since he was 5, but he still has friends and acquaintances in Ukraine.

"The first thing I do every morning when I wake up is to open the news app and to see whether Kiev is fallen. A lot of Ukrainian and Russian people in Israel... this has become their morning routine in the last week".

"Suddenly this Ukrainian component in my identity has become very relevant, very stark and important, in ways that I didn’t imagine it would be. Suddenly I became very involved and suddenly I feel a lot of strong patriotic emotions to a country I’ve visited but I’ve never lived in my adult life".

On March 2, Ash Wednesday, a moment of prayer was held in the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre, with the recitation of the rosary in the Ukrainian language.

Danylo is a seminarian of the Greek Catholic diocese of Vienna, but he is originally from Lviv, a city in western Ukraine. Part of his family has remained there. He is in Jerusalem for a year of service.

"How can I contribute? How can I be there for my family, for others in my home country?
I slowly came to the realization that I was probably placed here in Jerusalem, the place of the Death and Resurrection of our Lord, for a reason".

The Catholic community of Nazareth also gathered to pray for peace in Ukraine.
