Sadly, fall migration is right around the corner, in fact some birds have already started. That means, if you live in an area with animals that hibernate, this is also the time of year they really try to pack the food in, and that could include what is in your birdfeeder. If you have bears around, the best thing to do is simply take down your feeders for a little while. Raccoons are a bit more bear-able, and although they might empty your feeder, a zip-tie at the top will prevent them from stealing it.

Dr. Bird discusses a question from Brion Lumley about Red-headed Woodpeckers dining at Oriole feeders and he also reminds us that it is vital to protect areas where large flocks of migratory birds stop over during their long journeys.

On that subject, you can help too by creating brush piles if you have the space - it offers great cover for tired migrating birds.

I got out on the lake this past week to find a Common Loon. We saw quite a few, but it was windy and choppy, so I didn’t get all the images I wanted. They are such striking birds to see, and their song is mesmerizing.
