In 1997 guitarist/vocalist Marc Star, fresh out Los Angeles fuzz rock outfit Thunderfuck 69, joined forces with bassist Yosh to feel out a potential writing partnership. After many bongloads and many drummers, Star and Yosh teamed up with drummer Danny Foronda at the end of 1999. Naming themselves after a line in a Monster Magnet song, Smoke sprang to life out of the diverse Los Angeles rock scene with a sound that lives up to the boldness of its name.

In 2000, Smoke went into Donner & Blitzen studios to work with producer Matthias Schneeberger, known for his extensive work with Man's Ruin bands and for playing keyboards with The Earthlings. In 2001, Smoke released the Cobra EP to the public. Metal Maniacs called Smoke, "heavy, evil combination of rock'n'roll's darkest forces" while England's Terrorizer referred to Smoke as "beefy, laidback all-American groove metal."

In 2002, Smoke returned to the studio, this time to Cowboy Small's Sound Ranch, to record with LA Weekly Award-winning producer and longtime friend, Bobby Tamkin who midway through the recording replaced Danny Foronda on drums. Tamkin used his conceptual expertise to turn this CD into more than simply a collection of outstanding tunes. The result was Smoke Follows Beauty, a full-length monster that gives the classic concept album a modern dose of hard rock.

Smoke Follows Beauty sold worldwide and the band to hit the road with a two-month nationwide tour bludgeoning 30 cities around the country. After this the band self-released an EP in 2004, never to be heard from again.
