Fakir Lalon Shah is a legendary figure in Bengal.
This year marks the 135th death anniversary of Lalon.
In Kushtia, a three-day festival is held from October 17 to 19 at his resting place in Cheuriya.
There will be music, speeches, and a fair.
In Dhaka, Suhrawardy Udyan will also host songs on October 18.

Professor Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak will give the keynote speech.
The ceremony is led by poet Farhad Mazhar and Professor A Al Mamun.
It will end with music in memory of Farida Parveen, who spread Lalon’s songs worldwide.

No ceremony can fully capture Lalon.
He was born in 1774 and survived smallpox.
A Muslim couple, Malam Shah and Matijan, took care of him.
He later became a spiritual teacher and humanist.

Lalon taught dehattaya, finding truth within the body.
He rejected divisions of faith and caste.
In his akhra, Hindus and Muslims sang together, and women joined men.
His songs spread across generations, inspiring Tagore, Nazrul, and even Allen Ginsberg.

Lalon’s songs also speak of love and human connection.
The festival honors his spirit, his music, and his vision of unity and humanity.
