Opulent exquisite theatrical Mid 19th C French traveling box, Nécessaire de voyage: The ebony veneered box has Buhl inlays in brass, tortoiseshell and mother of pearl (nacre) to the top and front. There are four faces depicted in the engraving.
The box opens to a tightly packed interior. It is lined with green silk and velvet.
The silver is decorated with guilloché- machine turning. Each silver piece has been stamped with a head of Minerva and a 1, indicating indicating 1st quality silver. There is a lift-out document wallet in the lid. Behind the document wallet there is an opulent theatrically framed mirror with gilded silver mounts.
The tray with boxes for ointments creams and powders lifts out.
Beneath it there is another tray with nécessaire d'écriture: pen holder quill cutting knife, a scimitar shaped paper-knife and a seal. There is also a nécessaire à couture: needle case, bodkin, pair of scissors, and a thimble.
All of the handles are silver with part gilded decoration using both repousse and guilloché decoration.
There is yet another fitted tray of nécessaire below with tortoiseshell mounted folding knives. The cut steel scissors are exquisite.
There is a place for a larger pair, which is alas missing!
There is a small corkscrew and a tortoiseshell handled nail file.
There are two types of coat hook; one to screw into a piece of wood, the other for hanging from a curtain.
The box has a silver mounted cut uranium glass scent bottle. The hinged silver mount is finely chased and when closed keeps the glass stopper in place.
The metal-work is jewelry: panels of machine turning, guilloché, are framed by gilded chassed repoussé.
Beneath the trays there are silk covered boxes with ivory handled brushes.
The scimitar shaped paper-knife; the blade is etched blued and gilded. The technique goes back to the manufacture of suits of armor.
