United States Launches Missile Strike on Baghdad in Retaliation for Assassination Plot

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a decisive military action on June 26, 1993, the United States launched a cruise missile strike against the headquarters of Iraqi intelligence in Baghdad. The attack was carried out in direct retaliation for a foiled Iraqi plot to assassinate former U.S. President George H. W. Bush during his visit to Kuwait in April of the same year.

The missile assault was authorized by President Bill Clinton following the presentation of evidence from U.S. intelligence agencies, which indicated that agents of Saddam Hussein's regime had orchestrated the attempted assassination. Kuwaiti authorities had discovered a car bomb and arrested suspects linked to Iraqi intelligence shortly after Bush's visit.
