On the west coast of Namibia, desert meets the Atlantic Ocean. Plant and animal life is adapted to the dry conditions coupled with ocean fog and the occasional rain. The Hoanib river is a dry and and gravel flood plain at times. Large sand dunes extend out to the coast.

Elephants, lions, giraffes, gemsbok (oryx), springbok are common. The Skeleton Coast was once noted for the whale and seal bones cast up on the beach, and then for numerous shipwrecks due to offshore rocks and fog. The strong cold Atlantic current brings nutrient rich water to the coast which supports a very large colony of brown fur seals (cape fur seal) at Cape Cross.

At the Skeleton Coast, the dry season is from May to October (these images are from August 2023). The wet season is in November to April when the temperatures are warmer yet moderated by the fog and sea breezes. Rainfall is low even in the wet season.
