1996 was a strange year for grunge. I remember living through it. When Kurt Cobain died, a lot of bands seemed to get discouraged.
It may have also been the inevitable timed downfall of some of the more serious drug users that some members of these bands had been
dabbling in since the late 80’s. Of the Big four of 90’s Grunge Pearl Jam’s No Code didn’t really have any hits that the previous three albums had,
and Alice in Chain’s self titled record was considered a weaker output than their previous material. Soundgarden in my opinion had a great record called Down on the Upside. Instead of being really heavy and durgy it was more of an alternative album with a looser more live sounding production. It didn’t make as big an impact as the previous two records but it’s been the one Soundgarden album that really has been growing on me. Unfortunately it would be the band’s last record until 2012’s King Animal. Chris Cornel would die 5 years later. In retrospect I can’t help but notice this song’s eerie symbolic foreshadowing of Chris’ death even though at the time the song was about a bad relationship that looked good on the surface.

Kim Thayil and Chris always loved to play in Alternate tunings which gave their music a dimension that a lot of other bands didn’t have. The double G notes on the G and B strings give the guitar solo a really thick and eerie middle eastern vibe to them. If you listen to Mind Riot from Badmoterfinger you can hear the really cool droning sound throughout the whole song. The guitars are tuned to all E notes (E, E, E, E, E, E)
