In this video, Tim Warner covers a high-level configuration of the native boot to VHD in Windows 8. Windows 7, Windows 8, WS2K8R2, and WS2k12 can all be booted from a VHD/VHDX file in the absence of a hypervisor. This results in a much cleaner option than dualbooting.

Initially, if you needed another installation of Windows for testing, development, or application compatibility purposes, you had to procure new hardware. In later years, Windows allowed you to hook up or build a virtual machine to accomplish that goal. While virtualization and separate hardware systems still have their uses, there are some cases in which you’ll need another installation of Windows to work with, and you don’t want to use a hypervisor to accomplish that goal. Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2012 all have the built-in capability to boot from a virtual hard disk file.
