In today's video, I'll share the easy way to see bioluminescent plankton in the Pacific Northwest—joining a group for a bioluminescence night kayak tour.

I'll show our experience on a night kayak tour of Cowichan Bay on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. While we had an amazing (and easy) time experiencing the bioluminescence, capturing it on video is not easy, so just a heads-up that this video does not include any cool glowing plankton.

Cowichan Bay is on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. It’s a great place to view bioluminescent plankton by kayak, but there are many great viewing places throughout the Pacific Northwest. Look up bioluminescence kayaking tours online to find opportunities near you.

The bioluminescence tour we did was through Cowichan Bay Kayaking at the Blue Nose Marina. The cost of the tour is about $70 per person as of 2024, and it includes the kayak rental and other equipment needed—a head lamp and life jacket.

Kayaking begins just before sunset, which is a beautiful time to be out on Cowichan Bay. The first part of the tour is a sunset paddle around the bay while watching birds and jellyfish, and learning about the bioluminescence from the guide.

Bioluminescence is easiest to see on darker nights, so it’s best, though not critical, to go close to a new moon.

Attendance varies a lot by night, but on our tour it was just us, two other attendees, and our guide, so it felt very relaxed even though we were part of a tour group.

There were lots of lights from the town of Cowichan Bay, but we paddled to a sheltered area where trees blocked the light.

Once there, glittering blue lights would shimmer in the water every time we swirled our paddles and agitated the bioluminescent plankton!
