Ophidian speakers are the brainchild of Gareth James, who has been designing speakers for over 25 years. Based in the Wirral, all Ophidian speakers are designed and built in the UK, with some unique elements.

Having a small but enthusiastic following, Ophidian have a series of speakers that are set to grow over the next 12 months.

Currently the M series is on its 2nd evolution and is made up of the ultra compact Minimo 2 (think Neat Iota size) the Mojo 2 (KEF LS50 beater) and the Mambo 2 (PMC Prodigy5 size)

There is then a jump to the 3 way Incanto, Ffion and flagship Voodoo.

The incoming Seren standmount speaker will sit in a new range between M Series and Incanto.
We expect a floorstanding speaker to be based on the new drive unit in Seren will arrive at some point too.

The 22mm tweeter used in the flagship Voodoo trickles down in Ffion, Incanto and Seren. But that’s where the similarities end.

All Ophidian speaker employ Aeroflex. AEROFLEX is a unique bass loading method that enables even the most compact cabinets to deliver clean, accurate bass. By utilising a much larger and longer port system AEROFLEX drastically lowers air velocity, properly controlling the driver throughout its stroke. This greatly enhances dynamic range and ensures the speaker produces the same tonal balance at both high and low listening levels. In its simplest terms, it’s almost a reverse transmission line.

All Ophidian crossovers use Mundorf components and some of the higher end speaker use WBT binding posts.

Incanto is a more traditional speaker in its looks, a 3 way with a 50mm dome Mid Range driver in its own contained chamber, plus 3 175mm bass drivers. The Aeroflex port runs across the bottom of the cabinet at the rear.

Ffion is a tapered cabinet design hiding a downward firing 8” bass driver mated to a 5” mid bass driver.

Timing and rhythm is always spot on with Ophidians designs and they offer a fatigue free, even response listening experience. Ffion in particular images incredibly well in both width and depth and the Minimo 2 fools you into thinking it’s a compromise but it really isn’t!

Ophidian are really a gem in a crowded marketplace where some bigger brands rely on heritage to sell their products, rather than performance.
