Sri Lanka: Urban low-income communities are among the most economically deprived & the worst affected are our children. Main challenges these children face in this community are; social exclusion and isolation from their parents due to alcoholism, extra-marital affairs & divorce. We also identified that the main obstacle for education is poverty & the majority of these children are studying up until ordinary level (G.C.E O/L) & find jobs. Majority of the children (18 out of 30) have given up their education after G.C.E O/L in order to provide the opportunity for their younger siblings to perceive their education. At urban neighbourhoods the poverty could not be defined solely on economic factors. However it has many other forms such as, limited space (over populated), Shanty culture (unstable houses aligned one on the other in a limited space), limited or no access to quality infrastructure in order to meet basic needs (water, drainage systems and shared toilets) and privacy. At RRSF we are concerned & committed in supporting children of these communities in order to gain better life by having good education.
