He begins this session by highlighting the importance of knowing the goal of any practice. Moving on, he explains what 'Upanishad' means and takes up the Mandukya Upanishad which deals with the states of consciousness, common to all, for a brief outline.

He ends the session, giving a hint of what is to follow, in sessions 2, 3 & 4 of day 2.
