Hi everyone,

Being in veterinary/medical school with the current global circumstances poses a challenge. Although online lectures can be great, the lack of practical classes leave students with less than optimal level of clinical skills experience.

Today I will show you how you can create your own cruelty-free phlebotomy/venipuncture simulation model at home, which you can use to practice drawing blood, placing IV catheters/cannula and bandaging.

Commercial medical simulation models can range from hundreds - thousands of dollars and are often completely unaffordable for students. The supplies used in this video are often easy to find around the house or can be purchased at a low cost on amazon or the medical supply store of your choice. You may also wish to ask your university for free supplies to practice from home.

Studies show that simulation models can be even more helpful than practising on animals and people especially at the beginning by increasing the level of confidence in students in a low stress environment.

To make fake blood you will need

- A tablespoon for measuring

- Water for thinning the glycerine

- A container with lid to mix and store the fake blood

Other things you will need

- Tattoo Practice fake Skin made out of silicon - This material is similar to human skin but can be covered with faux fur for an animal model. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...

- Pool Foam Noodle

- Painters Masking Tape optional

- Small Kitchen Bag Clips - From Ikea but you can find on amazon

- Micropore Surgical Paper Tape

- All Purpose Adhesive

- Cotton Balls

- Syringes & needles - Any size and needle gage is okay

- Disposable gloves

- Rubbing alcohol or water can be used for practice

- Soffban Padding and vet wrap (Cohesive bandaging) are optional if you want to use your model to practice bandaging.

- Paper Towel and thick card board sheet

- A Knife

- Scissors

- Spoon
