Peak Rail • D8 Penyghent • Heritage Railway • Peak District • Matlock to Rowsley

I have wanted to visit this excellent railway for years! I have driven past the stations several occasions at out-of-hours times in the day, on my way to and from the Peak District. I was getting annoyed that I had not visited it properly so, when Kit and I booked in a weekend in the area for some trekking, I included a day on the railway as well. I just had to!

We started at Darley Dale, took the first train south and then travelled back north to the top of the line at Rowsley South Station.

Our lead was the mighty Penyghent loco, D8. I just felt that it wanted to stretch it’s legs, or should that be spin it’s wheels, rather more than the leisurely 25 miles an hour line speed limit. It was good to see the little saddle tank loco out on the line too.
