In today's video we will be focussing on the STI Chlamydia. We will cover how it is caused, its symptoms, some tip and tricks to prevent an infection and a possible treatment plan.

What is Chlamydia?
It is a sexually transmitted disease, caused by a bacteria named Chlamydia Trachomatis. It can infect both men and women. In a men it resides in the urethra, rectum or his throat. In women Chlamydia may nestle in the cervix, rectum or throat.

What are the symptoms of Chlamydia?
The incubation time is about 2-6 weeks. After this period a lot of people may remain asymptomatic.
Now women that do develop symptoms may experience the following: an abnormal vaginal discharge, which may have a strong smell, a burning sensation when peeing and pain during intercourse.
Men who are infected may experience: a thick, cloudy, brown-yellowish, foul-smelling discharge from their penis, a burning sensation while peeing and/or constant pain/itching/burning of the opening of their penis or their testicles.

How common is Chlamydia?
About 3.8% of all women and 2.5% of all men worldwide had Chlamydia in 2015.

Tips & tricks:
Think twice before beginning sexual relations.
Consider other sexual activities.
Use a condom.
Avoid drinking alcohol or using drugs.
Have regular tests and checkups for STIs.
Be aware of your own and partner's body.

Treatment:
Chlamydia can be treated and cured effectively with antibiotics. Most guidelines suggest azithromycin, doxycycline, erythromycin, levofloxacin or ofloxacin.
