Researchers from CREATE Lab, EPFL, and Nestlé Research Lausanne have developed BabyBot, a soft robotic infant that mimics how real babies feed from birth to six months old. Built using soft robotics and advanced sensors, BabyBot has a realistic mouth, soft tongue, and neural circuits that replicate feeding behaviors like suckling, swallowing, and even gagging or choking.

This innovation aims to solve a major challenge in pediatric research: testing feeding tools and procedures without putting real infants at risk. Unlike traditional simulations or imaging tools, BabyBot responds and behaves like a real baby, offering a safer and more accurate way to study infant feeding.

The robot can “grow” from newborn to six months, adapting from liquid feeding to semi-solid foods, just like a real child. This makes it ideal for testing baby bottles, nipples, spoons, and medical devices.

The team plans to upgrade BabyBot with artificial saliva and chewing capabilities to extend its usefulness beyond 6 months. This project marks a huge leap in child health research, medical training, and product development, paving the way for ethical, non-invasive infant care studies.
