“Alzira” belongs to Giuseppe Verdi’s early operas and is part of his so-called “galley years.” Between 1844 and 1846 he composed five operas: Ernani, I due Foscari, Giovanna d’Arco, Attila, and Alzira. With a running time of only 90 minutes, Alzira is one of his shortest works. Verdi’s librettist Salvatore Cammarano based the text on Voltaire’s Alzire ou les Américains, trimming away its philosophical elements and focusing on the love triangle between Alzira, the daughter of an Inca chief, Zamoro, the warrior thought dead who returns heroically, and the tyrant Gusmano.

This new production premiered in July 2024 at the Opernfestspiele Heidenheim, directed by Andreas Baesler and conducted by Marcus Bosch, who has led the festival since 2010 and developed it into one of Europe’s most successful classical festivals.
