Today ‪@NanceDrew‬ had her 3rd court appearance.
Court started at 9:00a
There is no indication that Chadwicke Burke nor a Scientology lawyer are in the courtroom
Several public defender cases were called and the complaining witnesses (all cops) did not show - Dismissals
One defendant no-showed and the bench warrant was issued.
9:09a Joe Cecala Jr. peeks into the court room. and leaves. He does this 3-4 times.
Nance's case is called. States Attorney's calls for the complaining witness, Chadwicke Burke. There is no response. States Attorney asks for a continuance; judge emphatically says NO! and dismisses the case.
Nance, ‪@StyleAudit1A‬ , Nance's Partner and I leave the courtroom and wait in the foyer. We chat with a reporter from the Sun-Times. Joe Cecal is also in the lobby.
Nance's Attorney arrives he was stuck in traffic. Upon entering, Joe Cecala says Hi to him and waves him over. The attorney speaks with Cecala before speaking with Nance.
Eventually the attorney comes and speaks with Nance. It was mostly an update on what happened.
Everyone heads back into the courtroom. Joe Cecala chats with the States Attorney and they trade e-mail addresses and phone numbers. Cecala is also overheard mentioning a date in September as well as saying something about the address of the Church of Scientology, 650 S. Clark Street. This becomes clearer later.
Nance and her lawyer talk through some options and eventually decide that they want to request a trial to prevent this cycle of dismissals and refiling.
At this point, Joe Cecala and the States Attorney have completed their conversation.
As Cecala walks away from the well, he is staring intently at Nance's partner and me. Nance's partner and I continue chatting until she notices over my shoulder that Cecala is still staring at her. She waves and then he erupts that she, Nance's partner, is threatening and trying to intimidate Joe Cecala. He then says that he's going to call the sheriff into take care of this. I then ask if he has just threatened me. He smirks and leaves the courtroom. Not wanting to let him lie to the sheriff, I walk out to the lobby as well. There we find Joe Cecala talking to 2 sheriffs, and when they see me, Joe tried to cover his mouth and continue to move blocking my view of the interaction. The sheriffs are unimpressed by his claim. They then start into 10-15 minutes of social conversation like co-workers would.
Eventually, Joe Cecala has had enough court for the day and heads to the courthouse exit. At this time the sheriff waves at him, I ask Joe if the sheriff just threatened him. No response, as Scientologists are one to do around SPs.
He leaves the courthouse and sees Juanita filming outside. He them crosses the street to avoid her and the camera. Joe's car is on Kedzie heading North. This would mean he would have to pass Juanita and the courthouse as he leaves. He moves a bit forward then immediately reverses the car and turns to head south avoiding the camera again.
While I am out in the lobby with Joe, Nance case is recalled. I was NOT in the courtroom, so I can only relay what they have told me.
The next court date is set. It will be August 5th. This also means that discovery can begin. However, one of the terms of release conditions for Nance will be that she can not be near 650 S. Clark Street, the address of the cult.
