German Sunken Apple Cake

This delightful cake, so popular in Germay, is easy to make. Quarters of slitted apple are placed on a vanilla cake batter and then baked. The batter rises up during baking to encase the apple as it softens. The result is a lovely soft and flavoursome cake with the softened apple making a perfect cake to enjoy as a snack or as a dessert, with cream, ice cream or custard.
