Rattan Bai was born on 15-07-1890 in India. She was an Indian Film Actress & Singer who best known for her work in Bollywood industry.


Rattan Bai was born in a well to do family of bureaucrats. Indian Talkie released in the year 1931 and in those days the casting director used to choose actors who were able to sing as well. During this time women’s participation in acting was indeed a rarity. She was a talented singer herself and besides that, she composed and wrote Bhajans. She made her acting debut in the year 1933 by acting in a Marathi film called Swarajyachya Seemewar.

She was married to Dr. Prabhakar Shilotri, and together the couple had a daughter named Saroj Shilotri who is known as Shobhana Samarth. Actress Tanuja and Nutan are her grandchildren. Tanuja was married to Shomu Mukherjee thus she became a part of the famous Samarth-Mukherjee family of Bollywood. Actress Kajol and Rani Mukherjee are her great grand daughters and Mohnish Bahl is her great grandson.
