Nearly 500 years after the English Reformation, Canterbury Cathedral, the Church of England's mother church, hosted a Roman Catholic Mass celebrated by Archbishop Miguel Maury Buendia, the papal nuncio to the UK. The historic mass was celebrated in honor of Thomas Becket, who was martyred there in 1170. Notably, attendees received a plenary indulgence. This event reversed history, given that Henry VIII's break with Rome in 1535 led to the destruction of shrines and relics, and ended the practice of indulgences for pilgrims, a major catalyst for the Protestant Reformation. The Mass, marking the feast of Becket, commemorated the ‘translation of his relics’, which had been moved to the shrine behind the altar until Henry VIII destroyed it in 1538. While Roman Catholic Masses have occurred at the cathedral before, this was the first time a papal nuncio celebrated it here. Only Becket's bloodstains remain at the cathedral, but the Roman Catholic parish of St. Thomas acquired a bone relic of Becket's, which was brought to the cathedral for the Mass. The July 7 event signals a growing interest in shrines, saints, and relics within the Church of England, often supported by the Roman Catholic Church, which preserved relics from the Reformation's iconoclasm.
