Go 10s Faster or Lose the Race

Sprint enduro… A relatively new format of dirt bike racing, that’s ruleset was foreign even-to-me until just recently. But it’s brilliant! not only because an event requires far less land, crew and timing logistics than the traditional ‘rally style’ does, but also for the action it produces! Being short-lap based, the events are much more approachable to riders who might normally stick to cross-country or motocross. And spectators actually get to see their favourite riders come past more than like, three times if they’re lucky… It’s a win, win, win!

And this was exactly what was on Brad Groombridge’s mind going into round two of the 2023 New Zealand Sprint Enduro Series (NZSS) in Cambridge, not ten minutes from Hobbiton! After dominating the first round by almost a minute – He was looking to extend his lead in the championship… But he hadn’t banked on Yamaha New Zealand’s, Tommy Watts being there this time. As another one of the country’s fastest riders, Tommy’d be looking to knock Brad off the top step and establish himself as a very real title threat.

Clearly, we were in for one hell-of-a clash… But nobody could’ve predicted how close it’d come down to the wire!
