Salām ʿalaykum, and welcome back to Reflection, where we explore the wisdom of the Qur’an through the lens of Tafsīr al Mīzān by ʿAllāmah Muḥammad Ḥusayn Ṭabāṭabāʾī.

If Allah is in control of everything, what role do my choices truly play?
If my life unfolds within God’s will, am I actually free?
And when I act, when I sin, when I repent, is that genuinely my decision, or was it already written?

In this episode, we explore how the Qur’an rejects both extremes, absolute compulsion (jabr) and total delegation (tafwīḍ), and how al Mīzān presents a deeper and more coherent framework: human agency is real and morally binding, yet always sustained within the sovereignty of Allah.

Qur’an 81:29
وَمَا تَشَآءُونَ إِلَّا أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
You do not will, except that Allah wills, the Lord of the worlds.
Qur’an 2:286
لَا يُكَلِّفُ ٱللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا ۚ لَهَا مَا كَسَبَتْ وَعَلَيْهَا مَا ٱكْتَسَبَتْ ۗ
Allah does not burden any soul beyond its capacity. For it is what it earns, and against it is what it earns.
Qur’an 13:11
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يُغَيِّرُ مَا بِقَوْمٍ حَتَّىٰ يُغَيِّرُوا۟ مَا بِأَنفُسِهِمْ ۗ
Indeed, Allah does not change what is in a people until they change what is within themselves.
Qur’an 8:17
فَلَمْ تَقْتُلُوهُمْ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ قَتَلَهُمْ ۚ وَمَا رَمَيْتَ إِذْ رَمَيْتَ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ رَمَىٰ ۚ
You did not kill them, but Allah killed them. And you did not throw when you threw, but Allah threw.
