South Carolina's Department of Public Health (DPH) has confirmed the first human fatality from Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) virus in the state in over 20 years.

The EEE virus is spread to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito and is not transmissible from person to person. Most people who develop symptoms from an infected mosquito bite do so within 4 to 10 days of the bite.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), persons with mild symptoms of the EEE virus may experience high fever, body aches and pains, and fatigue that lasts 1 to 2 weeks. More severe symptoms can be neurological, including meningitis (inflammation of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord) or encephalitis (swelling of the brain). Symptoms may include fever, headache, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, behavioral changes, drowsiness, and coma.
