The historical basis of Bangladesh's relationship with the UK is very strong and historical. The relationship between Britain and Bangladesh started from the period of British India. Britain gave shelter to Bangladeshi officials and diplomats who fled to the UK during Bangladesh's war of independence. The British government, politicians and the media criticised the atrocities that took place in Bangladesh in 1971, and expressed sympathy for the liberation forces. In 1972, Britain established a High Commission in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, and Anthony Golds was the first British High Commissioner to Bangladesh.
