David Valdez is a 57-year-old professional musician, from the United States. He and his ex-wife were earning about $200,000 combined, but were barely able to save any money in the U.S.

Valdez has lived all over the U.S., sometimes fleeing gentrification that pushes out artists like himself. He moves in search of the next thriving music scene.

In 2022, Valdez gave up on the U.S. to play music in Mexico. But as Mexico City grew in popularity, living there became prohibitively expensive. So Valdez moved to Da Nang, Vietnam in 2023, which he says is "exponentially better than any place I've ever lived."

Valdez breaks down his experiences living in the US, Mexico City, and Da Nang. He shares what he misses about Mexico and explains why he describes Da Nang as "paradise."
