Uttarakhand's Joshimath is sinking; residents witness their homes falling apart

A few years ago, Neelam Bhujwan lost her husband. Now, she fears her home will be next. From her rented accomodation, she stares at her home - The yellow-coloured structure at a distance. The only reason she's back here is to pull out photos off the wall, happy memories that she and her two children fear could get buried if their home caves in. Over 600 homes in Joshimath have cracks and the number seems to be rising with an alarming frequency. The town that has both religious as well as strategic significance has been a bundle of nerves for days as people are forced to vacate their homes, and shift to temporary relief shelters. The cracks on their homes have widened and the fear of the homes and lives coming crashing down has heightened.
