Geamana was an idilic Romanian village located in a picturesque valley in the Apuseni Mountains. But in 1978, the communist dictator of Romania would change all of this. A copper deposit had been discovered nearby and mining it would create massive amounts of toxic waste. Unfortunately for the residents of Geamana, the valley where their village laid was deemed the perfect spot to dump the toxic waste, and soon their village was flooded. Today, all that is visible is the church steeple which used to be the highest point in the village.

Visiting this place was very surreal. The contrast between the disgusting toxic lake and beautiful mountains surrounding it is such a strange sight to see. It's hard to imagine what it must have been like for the residents to see their beautiful town turned into an ecological disaster.

After spending the morning seeing some of Romania's darker past, we decided to head out to see one of its natural wonders. Scărișoara Cave is home to a glacier, and it is one of the biggest ice caves in Romania. After exploring the cave a bit we started driving to our next destination through the Carpathia Mountains, which was some of the most beautiful driving we had on the entire trip.
