A Log with a Life of Its Own! In the beautiful region of Catalonia, children celebrate Christmas with a character that’s truly unique and wonderfully silly: Tió de Nadal! He’s not a reindeer, not a gnome, and not a human—he’s a magical log!

Tió de Nadal looks like a friendly, chunky log. He has a big, smiley painted face, a cute little nose, and he always wears a cozy red hat (the barretina, a traditional Catalan hat) and is wrapped in a warm blanket to keep him from getting cold!

The Christmas Log's Special Diet! The fun begins on December 8th (the Feast of the Immaculate Conception).

Families find a nice log in the forest or buy one, and bring it home. This is Tió de Nadal!

Every single day, from December 8th until Christmas Eve, children must "feed" Tió de Nadal! They leave him little bits of food (like fruit peels, bread, or nuts) under his blanket to make sure he's well-fed and happy. The idea is to make him grow bigger and stronger!

Keeping Him Warm: He's always kept cozy with his blanket, right by the fireplace, so he feels loved.

The Magical Christmas Poop! This is the most exciting and funniest part, which happens on Christmas Eve!

The Song and the Sticks: After dinner, children gather around Tió de Nadal. They sing a special song about him (the Caga Tió song!) and gently tap him with sticks.

The Presents! After the song and tapping, children lift his blanket, and guess what?! Tió de Nadal has "pooped out" little gifts, candies, and sweets! It’s always a surprise to see what magic he leaves!

The Ending: Tió de Nadal doesn't disappear; he simply "poops" until there are no more presents. Sometimes, the very last thing he "poops" is a salty herring, an onion, or a piece of charcoal, which means he's all out of magic for the year!
