A Moment with the Peacock Butterfly

One day, a vibrant Aglais io fluttered into my home, as if drawn by curiosity or fate. I took the opportunity to film and photograph this stunning visitor, careful not to touch its delicate wings—knowing that the powder they carry is vital to their flight and survival. After our quiet photo session, I gently guided it onto a stick and placed it on a nearby tree. From there, it took off into the air, free once more. The picture with the butterfly released on the tree is at the end of the video, in front of the last 3 pictures. Is on a green leaf.

Later, in the woods, I encountered another one—this time feeding on tree sap, its wings catching the light like stained glass. These encounters felt like nature’s quiet gifts, moments of connection with something wild and beautiful. The 2 pictures are at the end of the video, in front of the last picture that ends the video. Feeding from the tree sap were and other beings, including a beetle that I will present in the near future.

Appearance
The upper side of its wings is a rich reddish-brown with striking eyespots—blue, yellow, and black—on each wing. These eyespots mimic the eyes of larger animals to scare off predators.
The underside is dark and cryptic, perfect for camouflage when resting or hibernating

Habitat & Distribution
Found across Europe and temperate Asia, all the way to Japan.
Loves gardens, meadows, woodlands, and even urban parks.
Often hibernates in buildings, hollow trees, or woodpiles

Behavior & Life Cycle
Monogamous mating system—females mate only once after overwintering
Eggs are laid in clusters (up to 400!) on nettles and hops.
Caterpillars are black with spiky rows and white dots. They grow up to 42 mm before pupating into chrysalises that can be grey, brown, or green

Cool Adaptations
Can make a hissing sound by rubbing its wings together—audible even to humans!
Uses its eyespots and sound to intimidate predators like mice

Mythological Name Origin
The name “Io” comes from Greek mythology—Io was a priestess of Hera and daughter of Inachus.
