Hakone Gardens, originally a private estate, was designed as a Japanese garden by Isabel Stine, inspired by the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition. Major Charles Lee Tilden later purchased the property, adding features that gave it a formal Japanese garden estate look. In 1966, the City of Saratoga purchased Hakone Gardens to be a city park, maintained by the City Parks Department and open to the public.

Hakone Estate and Gardens has undergone significant restoration and enhancement efforts. The Hakone Foundation, established in 2000, has raised funds and resources to restore historic buildings, improve landscaping, and expand cultural programs. The Foundation continues to collaborate with the City of Saratoga and various partners to preserve and enhance this national treasure.
