Today I'm presenting you one of presumably the most renown streets in Vienna – Mariahilfer street.

I started this walk from the Vienna Westbahnhof (the West Railway Station in Vienna) on Mariahilfer Gürtel to the Museumsquartier. This part of the street is car-free and you can enjoy the many shops, boutiques, cafes and restaurants.

You can find also the church Mariahilfer, the Stiftskirche (Collegiate Church), the monument of the Austrian classical composer Joseph Haydn as many beautiful old and modern buildings. An interesting fact is that under the street there were an Ancient Roman road taking the same direction, part of which was discovered in 1914.

In the previous centuries the street had different names as Kremser Road or later Bayrische Landstraße, renamed again in 1663 to Poststraße. With the construction of Vienna Westbahnhof in 1859 the street and this part of the city started to gain in popularity and gradually the first restaurants, hotels and cafes began to appear. Mariahilfer street got its present name in 1897 after the district or the former suburb of Mariahilf.
