Star Placemat (Supla) Instructions

Round 1:
Start with a magic ring.
Into the magic ring, yarn over once and make a 3-part double crochet (US terms). Work 12 double crochets in total, separated by 1 chain between each stitch.

Round 2:
Work into each double crochet from the previous round:
• In the spaces, alternate between single and double crochets.
• The round ends with 36 double crochets in total.

Round 3:
Chain 3 to start.
Next to it, make 1 double crochet.
Chain 3, skip one space, then make 2 double crochets together (as a pair).
Repeat this to make 12 double crochet pairs.

Round 4:
Chain 3 to begin.
Make a double crochet pair on the next stitch.
Also make a pair of double crochets into the chain space.
Work with a sequence of one single, one pair, placing double crochets into the spaces.
Complete the round with 60 double crochets.

Round 5:
Chain 3 to start.
Make 1 double crochet next to it.
Chain 3, skip one space, then make a double crochet pair.
Repeat this to make 20 pairs of double crochets.

Round 6:
Chain 3 to start.
Make a double crochet into the next stitch.
Also place a double crochet into the chain spaces.
Finish with 100 double crochets.

Round 7:
Chain 3, then make 1 double crochet.
Chain 3, skip 2 spaces, and make a double crochet pair.
Repeat to make 25 pairs of double crochets.

Round 8:
Chain 3, make a double crochet in the same stitch.
Then over each pair from the previous round:
• Work one single and one double crochet.
In the chain spaces, continue with double crochets.
At the very end, place a single double crochet (not a pair).
Finish with 124 double crochets.

Round 9:
Chain 3, make 1 double crochet.
Chain 3, then make double crochet pairs.
Repeat to form 31 pairs.

Round 10:
Chain 3, make a double crochet in the same stitch.
In the previous row’s pairs, alternate:
• One stitch gets 1 double crochet,
• The next gets 2 double crochets.
In between, work into the chain spaces as well.
Pattern: one single, one pair → next one single, one single → then again one single, one pair, etc.
End with 140 double crochets.

Star Placemat (Rounds 11–16)

Round 11:
Chain 5 to begin.
Yarn over once and pull through in 2 steps (half double crochet or an extended stitch).
Leave one space, then yarn over once and again pull through in 2 steps.
Repeat this across the round, with 1 chain between stitches.
Finish the round with 70 stitches total.

Round 12:
Chain 5 to begin.
Yarn over once and pull through in 3 steps (triple crochet).
Between each stitch, chain 2.
Complete the round with 70 triple crochets total.

Round 13:
Chain 5 and slip stitch (without yarn over) into the next stitch.
Repeat this:
• Chain 5, slip stitch into the next stitch.
Do this 3 times in a row (3 × 5 chains connected).
Then:
• Chain 7, slip stitch into the next stitch.
• Chain 5 and slip stitch into the next 3 stitches again.
Repeat this pattern so there are 14 loops with 7 chains in between sets of 3 chain-5 arches.

Round 14:
Slip stitch along the chain to move into position (also called “sliding over the chain”).
Slip stitch across 3 chains to reach the top.
Then:
• Chain 5, slip stitch into the next space.
• Repeat: chain 5 and slip stitch into next space.
In the 7-chain space:
• Work 4 double crochets, chain 4, then 4 more double crochets.
• Chain 5, slip stitch into next space, chain 5, slip stitch into next space again.
In the next 7-chain loop, repeat the 4dc – 4ch – 4dc pattern.
Repeat this sequence across the round.

Round 15:
Slip stitch again along 3 chains to reach the working point.

Now:
• Chain 5, slip stitch into the next space.
In the 4 double crochets from the previous round:
• Work 4 new double crochets directly on top.
• Into the chain-4 space, work 2 double crochets, chain 4, then 2 double crochets again.
• Continue with 4 double crochets on top of the next 4 from the row below.
This creates a 6-part double crochet set across each arch.

Round 16 (Final Round):
Again, slip stitch across 3 chains to reach the center of the 5-chain arch.
Yarn over and begin working over the 6 double crochets from the previous round:
• Make 6 double crochets, then into the middle 4-chain space, work 2 double crochets,
• Chain 7 to form the pointy tip (picot),
• Then again 2 double crochets into the same space.
• Continue over the remaining stitches to make a total of 8 double crochets per point.
After finishing, slip stitch into the middle of the next 5-chain space (without yarn over).
Repeat this pattern (8 dc + 7 ch picot + 8 dc) in each arch.
This completes the final round of your Star Placemat.
