The head of Niger's army says he's supporting the soldiers who launched a coup against President Mohamed Bazoum. The presidential guard confined the deposed leader to his residence, where he has posted a defiant message on social media – and reportedly spoken to at least one world leader. The French foreign minister insists that the takeover isn't final. But France is Niger's former colonizer, and some want coup leaders to lean toward Moscow.
