Railway Film: Tangiwai or Bust - Behind the Scenes of a Steam Excursion (2018)

65 years on from the tragic Tangiwai Disaster that claimed 151 kiwi lives, at 10.21pm Christmas Eve 1953, we go all out behind the scenes on the efforts of organising and operating a main line steam train excursion. In this mini doco we see interviews, behind the scenes works both on and off the locomotive and of course, lineside action of Ja 1275 and Jb 1236 slogging it out on the North Island Main Trunk Line.

In May 2017, the Glenbrook Vintage Railway, KiwiRail, Rail & Maritime Transport Union, Ruapehu Lions Club and Mainline Steam Trust teamed up to organise a Tangiwai Memorial excursion to commemorate the two locomotive crew who did everything in their power to attempt to stop the train, thus saving another 100+ lives, driver Charles Parker and fireman Lance Redman.
