In the past, I’ve spoken a lot about SoFi’s hybrid cash management account and its many benefits. That’s why I was surprised earlier this week when I went to their site and noticed some significant changes that had come in under my radar. That’s because it seems that, at least for now, these adjustments only apply to those joining SoFi Money after June 8th, 2020 — nevertheless they’re definitely worth discussing.

Easily the most disappointing change is that SoFi will no longer reimburse ATM fees you incur at any machine in the world. Instead, they’ve join the Allpoint network, giving users access to more than 55,000 free ATMs. Still, 55,000 is not as good as any. Like I mentioned, those such as myself who joined SoFi Money prior to June 8th, 2020 are currently exempt from this change and will continue to have their ATM fees reimbursed.

On top of that change, SoFi Money is also changing their APY structure. Now, new users will earn just .01% APY on their money by default and will need to deposit at least $500 a month in order to earn the current .2% APY. Similarly, only those who qualify for the higher APY will be eligible for the SoFi Money Cashback Rewards Program, such as their local offers that are now in beta. Once again, those with SoFi Money accounts from before June 8th, 2020 will retain their higher APY status and still be able to earn cashback rewards.

These adjustments to SoFi Money are somewhat reminiscent of what I’ve complained about with other online offerings such as Aspiration. However, I do have to say that these changes aren’t nearly as egregious for a few reasons. First, unlike Aspiration, there’s currently not a spending requirement on earning higher interest. Additionally, and perhaps selfishly, I truly appreciate that SoFi exempted older users from these new policies. At the same time, I’m very much aware that this could change at any moment. In any case, if you’re not already a SoFi Money user, while the account does still have some nice perks, it seems it’s no longer the slam dunk it once was.
